Humana Military Healthcare Services Partners With Give an Hour to Support the Behavioral Health Needs of Service Members’ Extended Families & Loved Ones

LOUISVILLE, KY — May 22, 2008— Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS), the TRICARE contractor for the South Region, and ValueOptions, subcontractor for behavioral health, are assisting Give an Hour, a not-for-profit organization, with their goal of providing easy access to skilled behavioral health professionals for service members’ loved ones impacted by the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Give an Hour’s mission is to develop a national network of volunteers capable of responding to the behavioral health needs of America’s returning veterans and their family members. While spouses, children, parents, siblings and unmarried partners of military personnel are all being adversely affected by multiple deployments and extended lengths of tour - parents, siblings and unmarried partners are not eligible to receive behavioral health services through the TRICARE program. Give an Hour fills this gap by expanding the “family” to include all individuals impacted, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, and sisters.

"Our objective is to complement the services provided through the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs to military personnel and their families," said Barbara V. Romberg, founder and president of Give an Hour. "We are so pleased that HMHS has joined our efforts in reaching out to those impacted by a service member’s deployment."

Give an Hour, supported by TRICARE leadership, will garner additional support by continuing to reach out to the military community. The organization will do this in a number of ways including: working with the Department of Defense to identify returning troops and partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs to promote services to veterans nationwide.

ValueOptions’ will communicate with TRICARE network providers in the South Region to make them aware of the Give an Hour organization, and encourage them to contact Give an Hour if they are interested in participation. The list of behavioral health professionals volunteering includes: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, pastoral counselors, professional counselors and marriage and family therapists. Nationwide, approximately 1,200 providers have volunteered and will give one hour of their time per week, for up to one year, to render services free of charge to those in need. Individuals receiving the assistance will be given the opportunity to “give back an hour” by volunteering in their own communities.

“Giving back to the community in this way has a positive impact on everyone involved,” said Dave Baker, president and CEO of HMHS. “In many cases, deployed services members leave behind loved ones who need assistance in dealing with that person’s absence. I am pleased that our HMHS family can be a part of this worthy cause,” concluded Baker.

In addition, Humana Military and DefenseWeb Technologies, wholly-owned subsidiary of HMHS, joined their colleagues at Give an Hour to redesign the Give an Hour website.  The new design enhances visibility for visitors and potential volunteer providers. The site went live on May 15, 2008. For more information about Give an Hour and a list of local volunteer providers, please visit the Give an Hour Web site.
