LOUISVILLE, Ky. — November 19, 2007 — Humana Veterans Healthcare Services (HVHS), along with Congressman Jeff Miller (R-Fl-01) announced the sponsorship of the inaugural Emerald Coast Honor Flight trip. The mission of this flight is to take World War II Veterans from Northwest Florida to Washington, D.C. to visit their memorial. The inaugural flight is expected to take place in the spring of 2008.
The Emerald Coast Honor Flight is an organization, composed of individuals and businesses throughout Northwest Florida, and is a group dedicated solely to honoring America’s veterans for their many sacrifices. Congressman Miller conceptually brought the idea to community leaders and initiated the organization.
“We are especially proud to be affiliated with this project and group,” said Al Poteet, HVHS president and chief executive officer. “Honor Flight is about recognizing the many sacrifices the Greatest Generation made for this country. This is one way we can say thank you. ”
Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force Captain created the Honor Flight Program to honor veterans he has taken care of for 27 years. In May 2004, when the WWII Memorial was completed, Morse continuously heard from these veterans that they would like to travel to see the memorial. Honor Flight was conceived and the maiden flight took to the sky in May 2005.
