Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety Disorders consist of a number of separate but related conditions.  They represent a highly prevalent group of disorders and often occur in combination with other behavioral health disorders and general medical conditions.  The annual prevalence of anxiety disorders is approximately 20%.  Annual costs related to Anxiety Disorders has been estimated to be at least $40 billion annually.  Comorbid anxiety can be associated with poorer outcomes for medical disorders such as hypertension, asthma and gastrointestinal disease.  Outcomes for other behavioral health disorders can also be affected.  Anxiety disorders can, many times, precede the development of a depressive disorder, and coexisting anxiety is often related to greater impairment, suicide risk, and substance abuse.

The DSM-IV includes Panic Disorder (with or without Agoraphobia), Agoraphobia without Panic Disorder, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Substance Related Anxiety, Anxiety due to a General Medical Condition, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder and Anxiety NOS.
