Disorders of Childhood
and Adolescence

Disorders Usually First Diagnosed in Infancy, Childhood or Adolescence
These are the disorders most often diagnosed at an early age. Adults who present with symptoms which meet diagnostic criteria may also be diagnosed with one of these disorders utilizing all relevant qualifiers (i.e. level of severity and acuity).

Mental Retardation

Learning Disorders
Motor Skills Disorder Communication Disorders
Pervasive Developmental Disorders     Tic Disorders
Attention Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders
Feeding and Eating Disorders of  Infancy and Early Childhood
Other Disorders of Infancy, Childhood, or Adolescence

It is also important to note that although most DSM-IV-TR diagnoses have a single criteria set which applies to children, adolescents, and adults alike, certain disorders have specific age limitations and duration of symptom requirements which must be met when being assigned to children and adolescents. Information regarding these issues can be found in the DSM-IV-TR text under the heading “Specific Culture, Age, and Gender Features”.
