Personality Disorders

Personality Disorders

Personality Disorders are defined as enduring patterns of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual’s culture, is pervasive and inflexible, have an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, are stable over time, and lead to distress or impairment. Personality Disorders include the following specific types:

Paranoid      Schizotypal
Schizoid      Borderline
Antisocial      Narcissistic

Histrionic

     Dependent
Avoidant      Obsessive-Compulsive

The diagnosis of Personality Disorder requires an evaluation of the individual’s long-term patterns of functioning. The characteristics that define these disorders may not be considered problematic by the individual, and supplementary information from other informants is often helpful in making an accurate diagnosis.
