April 1, 2008 TRICARE began providing benefits for National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored Phase II and III clinical trials. Prior to this, beneficiaries could participate in the Department of Defense Cancer Treatment Clinical Trials Demonstration. The demonstration ended March 31, 2008 but anyone participating in a trial under the demonstration will continue to receive benefits under the demonstration.
Phase II trials provide preliminary information about the anti-cancer effects of drugs or preventive agents, usually focusing on a particular type of cancer.
