Starting on January 1, 2018, TRICARE Select replaces TRICARE Standard and Extra. TRICARE Select is a self-managed, preferred provider network plan.

TRICARE Select and TRICARE Prime costs

Starting January 1, 2018, there may be changes to your TRICARE benefits. The following changes apply to most TRICARE plans. However, this does NOT include TRICARE For Life, the US Family Health Plan, the TRICARE Dental Program or the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program.


Improving what is covered

TRICARE covers services that are medically necessary. To be medically necessary means it is appropriate, reasonable, adequate for your condition and considered proven.

TRICARE now covers more services, including:

  • Coverage of medically necessary foods and vitamins
  • Eligibility of Certain Enrollees for Participation in Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) beginning in 2019
  • Extended coverage for certain members of the National Guard and Reserve dependents during certain disaster response duty
