Anxiety disorder

While some anxiety or worry may be normal in certain situations, such as a first date or public speaking, a true anxiety disorder includes all the feelings that come with normal anxiety but they can’t be turned-off or rationalized. The anxious feelings are exaggerated, out of control and disruptive in the person’s life.

In addition to chronic, excessive and usually unfounded worrying, there are also physical symptoms that accompany general anxiety disorder. At least three of the following symptoms need to be present for six months for diagnosis:

At least three of the following symptoms need to be present for six months for diagnosis:
  • Easily fatigued
  • Aches, pain, muscle tension
  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances (difficulty falling or staying asleep; or having restless, unsatisfying sleep)
  • Irritability (The anxiety and worry are not due to substance abuse or another medical or behavioral health condition)
