Substance abuse is repeated use of mind or mood-altering substances that result in life consequences for that person and/or those around him or her.

Mind or mood-altering substances may include: alcohol, prescription medications, marijuana, cocaine, sleeping pills, heroine, designer drugs, inhalants and others. Consequences of repeated use of these substances may include:

  • Legal issues
  • Marital, relationship and/or family problems
  • Job problems (e.g., repeated absences, calling in ill, poor work performance or being late to work)
  • School problems (rapid change in grades, suspensions, expulsions)
  • Health problems
  • Financial problems
  • Behavioral problems—changes in mood
  • Change in personality
