There are a variety of programs available to our beneficiaries who find themselves in special circumstances. Whether you're leaving the military, looking for disability assistance, need help with navigating the VA healthcare system or want to see a civilian provider, there's a program available to assist you in your journey.

Extended Care Health Option (ECHO)

ECHO supplements the basic TRICARE program by providing financial assistance for an integrated set of services and supplies. For those who qualify, ECHO provides benefits not available through the basic TRICARE program.

Who is eligible?

ECHO is only available to active duty family members with qualifying conditions, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Serious physical disability
  • Moderate to severe intellectual disability
  • Multiple disabilities (may qualify if there are two or more affecting separate body systems)
  • Extraordinary physical/psychological condition rendering the beneficiary homebound
  • Diagnosis of a neuromuscular developmental condition or other condition in an infant or toddler that is expected to precede a diagnosis of moderate to severe intellectual disability or serious physical disability

What are the benefits?

ECHO provides benefits not available through the basic TRICARE program, including:

  • Medical and rehabilitative services
  • In-home respite services
  • Special education
  • Durable equipment, including adaptation and maintenance
  • Transportation under certain circumstances
  • Institution care when a residential environment is required
  • Assistive services (e.g., those from a qualified interpreter or translator)
  • Expanded in-home medical services through ECHO Home Health Care (EHHC)

How do I enroll?

Qualified beneficiaries must enroll in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) through the sponsor's branch of service. To register for ECHO, the beneficiary may submit confirmation of EFMP enrollment and verification of a qualifying diagnosis. The required documents may be faxed to (877) 200-0401. Costs and coverage limits

There are no enrollment fees, but beneficiaries must pay part of the monthly expenses for authorized ECHO benefits. The monthly cost-share is only one fee per sponsor, not per ECHO beneficiary. You only pay the cost-share if you use ECHO benefits during that calendar month. The monthly cost-share is based on the sponsor's pay grade. Learn more about costs and coverage.

Supplemental Health Care Program (SHCP)

SHCP provides coverage for services provided by civilian doctors. Active Duty Service Members (ADSM) whose duty assignment is within 50 miles of a military hospital or clinic may be eligible for care under SHCP.

Who's eligible?

  • Active Duty Service Members (ADSM)
  • National Guard and Reserve members on active duty or who are authorized for Line of Duty (LoD) care
  • Beneficiaries on the Temporary Disability Retirement List are eligible to obtain required periodic physical examinations through SHCP
  • Medically retired former members of the armed services enrolled in the Federal Recovery Coordination Program
  • Eligible foreign military personnel (for outpatient care only)
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration personnel, U.S. Public Health Service personnel, and Reserve Officer Training Core (ROTC) students, cadets and midshipmen
  • Any non-TRICARE eligible person who receives approval from a military hospital or clinic to receive civilian services under SHCP (those with Medicare are not eligible for SHCP except if they are inpatient at a military hospital or clinic, and while remaining inpatient at the military hospital or clinic, require civilian diagnostic services that cannot be performed at the military hospital or clinic)

What's covered?

SHCP covers any healthcare service as long as the military hospital or clinic refers the patient or the military Service Point-of-Contact (SPOC) authorizes the care. For covered services, ADSMs do not pay cost-shares, copayments or annual deductibles. The SPOC also acts as a liaison between the ADSM and all members of the healthcare process, from the civilian healthcare professional to the claims processor.

Authorization process

The civilian healthcare provider will submit a request to Humana Military for review. The request is then reviewed for services NOT excluded by TRICARE against TRICARE coverage guidelines and approved or denied based on those findings. If ADSMs receive a denial letter for non-covered services, a waiver from DHA may be required to proceed. Instructions for the waiver will be included in the denial letter.

Warrior Navigation Assistance Program (WNAP)

WNAP was created to help guide warriors and their families through the military and Veteran Affairs' healthcare systems, while helping connect them with community resources, non-medical services and civilian healthcare in order to return them to productive lives.

Our mission

Our mission is to provide guidance and clinical support to military and civilian healthcare professionals with treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration of recovering warriors, enabling them to return to active duty or back to the community as productive veterans. We help guide recovering warriors and their families through the healthcare system and connect recovering warriors and their families with available resources that can help them resolve issues.

Our services

Returning warriors and their families can reach out for person-to-person support from a team that is specially trained to deal with the unique challenges they encounter. Guidance for the civilian healthcare sector caring for these service members is also available.

Caring for the caregiver

Caring for a wounded hero has many rewards, but it can also be demanding physically, emotionally and financially. Caregivers have many of their own responsibilities such as work, bills and taking care of children. As a caregiver, it's important to remember to make time for yourself. Do something for yourself each day. Join a support group where you can talk things over with other caregivers to help you realize that you are not alone. Hearing how others cope in similar circumstances can provide guidance for your specific situation.

Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP)

TAMP provides 180 days of transitional healthcare benefits to certain uniformed service members and their families. Sponsors and eligible family members may be covered by TAMP if the sponsor is involuntarily separating from active duty under specific honorable conditions.
