Update on ambulance services from airfields to medical facilities

November 22, 2022

Effective July 1, 2022, ground transportation from an airfield to an accepting medical facility is authorized and will be reimbursed at the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) Maximum Allowable Charge (CMAC) rates.

The airfield is considered the site of transfer between modes of transportation (e.g., air to ground). The modifier “I” should be used as the origin or destination code when billing ambulance services that meet the criteria.

There are no changes to reimbursement rates or authorization requirements.
