As part of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress directed the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to implement enrollment fees for TRICARE Select Group A retirees, starting January 1, 2021.
Group A includes those retirees whose initial enlistment or appointment, or that of their sponsor’s, occurred before January 1, 2018.
Please note: There is no change for TRICARE Select Group B beneficiaries, as they currently pay enrollment fees.Learn more about this change
Effective January 1, 2021, Group A retired beneficiaries are required to pay enrollment fees each month via allotment. You must sign up for allotment no later than 11/20/2020. After 11/20/2020, you must both set up your allotment AND make a one-time monthly payment prior to 12/31/2020 to avoid a break in coverage.
If you are unable to pay via allotment, you must set up a different automatic payment method before 12/24/2020 to allow time for processing and to avoid a break in coverage. Payments can be set up using your bank account or a debit/credit card.
If you are disenrolled for failure to set up allotment or automatic payments (for those who are not eligible for allotment), you must request reinstatement no later than June 30, 2021. Without reinstatement, you will only be able to receive care from a military hospital or clinic, if space is available, and you will be responsible for all civilian healthcare costs.
